Tough Outing for Woody Howard at the Motor Mile

RADFORD, Va., (July 19, 2005) - Joe Gibbs Racing development driver, Woody Howard returned to action this weekend in the USAR Hooters Pro Cup race at the Motor Mile Speedway in Radford, VA.

Howard’s last outing put his No. 55 Dean Motorsports Chevrolet in victory lane for his first series career win, and he looked to make it two in a row as the series rolled in to the Motor Mile Speedway.

Howard, who is no stranger to the Motor Mile Speedway, where he has competed in many NASCAR Dodge Weekly Racing events at the track, had high expectations for his chance of revisiting victory lane.

As practice began the No. 55 Dean Motorsports team was looking good for a qualifying run after being the fastest car in practice (lapping the .416-mile track at 16.780 seconds and 89.893 mph) and Howard would not disappoint the team by qualifying fifth.

When the green flag dropped, running in fifth position, it became clear that Howard would have to make adjustments to the No. 55 Dean Motorsports Chevrolet, if they were going to have a chance to win. The team made the decision to pit on lap 79 but the adjustment wasn't completed on that pit stop so he would have to pit again. The stop would end up costing Howard a lap.

Due to some unfortunate problems that plagued the No. 55 Dean Motorsports team, they wound up finishing the race in the 21st position three laps down.

Howard had this to say about the race…

“It was a rough night for the whole Dean Motorsports team, we had misfortunate things happen, but we kept our chins up and picked as many as we could as race went on.” – Woody Howard

“We know we have a team that can win races and we’ll go get ’em at Salem Speedway.” – Woody Howard
