Marc Davis finishes sixth in Bailey's 300 at Martinsville

MARTINSVILLE, VA (October2, 2006) - Martinsville Speedway was host to the Bailey's 300, the biggest Late Model Stock Car race in the country. One hundred and three of the best cars attempted to make the field of 42. Joe Gibbs Racing 16 year old development driver Marc Davis served notice to NASCAR's best that he has arrived. After qualifying with the 13th fastest time of 103 cars Davis then drove his Coca Cola Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS to an impressive 6th place finish.

Driving skillfully and patiently the NASCAR Drive for Diversity rookie claimed the fourth position at the mandatory pit stop after 100 laps. With an inversion Davis restarts 5th, moves back into 4th and settles in holding position for several long runs. On lap 176 the Coca Cola Chevrolet SS gets pushed to the high side and Davis can't get back in line until he is 8th. Driving the Reggie White inspired # 92 Davis races back to the 6th position. Marc Davis takes the checkered flag making his debut in 'Big Time' racing.

"Scott put together an awesome game plan and everything went right" said Davis about crew chief Scott Kilbury. "The crew had every angle covered so all I had to do was drive" commented Davis. Scott Kilbury's concerns were met with preparation and practice. "We had a plan and we were ready. Marc rose to the occasion and got the job done" said Kilbury.

Davis recently attended two GM Racing sponsored development driving test. "The feedback that the GM engineers provided was invaluable. I came to Martinsville prepared and was a better driver" boasted Davis about the GM program. "My Coca Cola Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS was perfect and my driving continues to improve" said Davis

One of the highlights of this turning point weekend was Davis having a chance to visit his mentor Wendell Scott, Jr. Scott was instrumental in Davis' participation in NASCAR's Drive for Diversity program. Davis is the first D4D driver to compete in the Bailey's 300. Davis' six wins this season makes him the most successful D4D driver to date. "We are so proud of Marc with his success and his commitment to win" said Wendell Scott, Jr. son of Wendell Scott the famous African American racing pioneer.
