Texas Preview - Kyle Busch

It's that time of the year again - the weather is turning colder, the leaves are falling from the trees, and winter is quickly approaching.

Along with the seasonal chill this time of year comes the annual round of changes in the air among the teams competing in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, as well.

One of those teams, with just three races remaining in the marathon-like Sprint Cup schedule, is the No. 18 M&M's team for Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR), which moves Dave Rogers to the top of the pit box as crew chief for driver Kyle Busch in Sunday's Dickies 500 Sprint Cup race at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth.

Busch, driver of the No. 18 M&M's Toyota Camry, will be paired with Rogers for the first time in Sprint Cup competition. But the two are already familiar with each other as the talented 24-year-old Busch piloted the No. 20 JGR Toyota, with Rogers as crew chief, for three races in the Nationwide Series last season. In those races - at Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hampton, Ga., Nashville (Tenn.) Superspeedway, and the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez road course in Mexico City - Busch and Rogers combined to lead 300 of the possible 503 laps and scored their first win together at Mexico City.

Talladega Race Report - Kyle Busch

Kyle Busch finished a respectable 15th in Sunday's AMP Energy 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway - a race that was three-quarters uneventful and one-quarter wild.

Busch, driver of the No. 18 M&M's Toyota Camry for Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR), started 13th and like most other drivers in the 43-car field, hoped that when the checkered flag flew, he would be in a position to claim victory.

The 2.66-mile Talladega oval, along with its sister track - the 2.5-mile Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway - are the only two restrictor-plate tracks on the Sprint Cup circuit where aerodynamics and horsepower reign supreme. But when everyone has a car capable of hitting nearly 200 mph, drivers need drafting partners to push them through the air and ahead of their counterparts. So while the race is 500 miles in length, most of it is spent trying to put oneself in a position for the final mile.

Martinsville Race Report

Kyle Busch used an impressive combination of patience and a late-race, two-tire strategy to finish a solid fourth in Sunday's TUMS Fast Relief 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway.

The driver of the No. 18 M&M's Halloween Toyota Camry for Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) was able to overcome a poor qualifying result (41st) en route to his fourth top-five finish in 10 career Sprint Cup starts at the .526-mile oval.

"It was definitely a great battle with everybody," said Busch, who matched his best career Sprint Cup result at Martinsville with his third fourth-place finish at NASCAR's smallest track. "It was a hard-fought day and the M&M's Camry was decent. I'm real proud of the effort. The guys had awesome pit stops all day. The guys worked hard. Every stop we made a change on the car trying to make it better. Tires were the name of the game. We just seemed to be on the right strategy when we could come get tires and drive back through some guys. We had a good enough car to do that with. We want to win every week, but I've been trying to get there and trying to get a little bit better. It seems like the past couple weeks, we've done some improving. I'm encouraged, but we've got a lot more to go."

Kyle Busch Quotes: Martinsville

Are you still trying to figure out Martinsville and are you comfortable racing there now?

"If I had Jeff Gordon's or Jimmie Johnson's success there, then I would be comfortable going there. But I haven't had any success there, yet. I've got maybe two top-fives and don't feel comfortable there. I'm not very good, yet. I've had some decent runs there, where I've felt like we've had a car to win and had a shot to win. Unfortunately, we weren't able to get the track position toward the end of the race. Jeff (Gordon) is so good there and Jimmie (Johnson) is so good there. They are probably the two most difficult guys to pass there because they know the place. They know how to get off the corner and how to roll the middle of the corner there. Everything is timing, and their stuff just works, whatever it is. We've got some work to do on trying to figure it out. I feel more comfortable going there than I did last year. For some reason, Denny (Hamlin) runs well there, and I'm not sure why I can't get my stuff to run well there because we have the same stuff. When we went to ‘Little Rock' (in Rockingham, N.C.) and tested before the first race, we gained somewhat because we ran identical lap times as the 48 (Johnson). We were actually a tick better on an 80-lap run than they were on a 60-lap run. We still lost tires there in the spring, so I'm hoping we've figured that out for this time around."

Charlotte Race Report

Kyle Busch battled back from a spin on lap 120 to finish a solid eighth in Saturday night's NASCAR Banking 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Lowe's Motor Speedway near Charlotte N.C.

The driver of the No. 18 M&M's/Susan G. Komen for the Cure Toyota Camry for Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) fell as far back as 31st in the 43-car field, but rallied for his sixth top-10 finish in 12 career Sprint Cup starts at Charlotte.

"It was an up and down night, for sure," said Busch, who had finished no worse than sixth in his four previous Sprint Cup starts at Charlotte. "Our M&M's Camry started off pretty good. We had some track position to start and I was just being patient. Right before we spun, everything seemed fine, but it flipped the switch and it seemed like my right-rear tire was going and I ended up losing (control) coming off of (turn) four after that. We had a big hole to dig out of from there. We ended up gaining some spots back, but it's tough to pass when you get back in traffic."
